“Estate Planning for Second Marriages and Blended Families”

February 23, 2017 4:00-5:30pm     (to be rescheduled at a later date)

Due to various factors related to a person’s assets and relationships, one size does not fit all when it comes to estate planning. When one or both of the clients are in their second marriage, there are numerous complexities which create conflict situations for the blended family during times of incapacity or the death of one spouse. It has been stated in many publications that almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Death and divorce create huge numbers of persons eligible for remarriage. The husband or wife or both, may have children from a prior marriage. Each may have accumulated real and personal property and other assets that each may want to preserve for their children of the prior marriage. We will review the inherent conflicts and creative solutions to minimize conflicts between stepparents and stepchildren.

“Foreign Asset Reporting and Compliance”

May 18, 2017  4:00-5:30pm

Under the IRS rules, an individual or entity, defined as a “US person” who owns a foreign financial account and/or foreign asset may have an obligation to report their assets to the IRS. In recent years, the IRS has increased their efforts by coordinating with foreign countries to discover those individuals and entities who have failed to report their foreign financial accounts. Significant civil and criminal penalties can result from violations of the reporting rules applicable to foreign accounts. Learn who has to file, what to file and what happens if you do not file.
